Anne Perry finally hits all the right notes. This is the best book in the series thus far. Monk shows very fallible human characteristics in this one and it gets him into trouble. He acts very shallow at times where women are concerned, flirting just because they're beautiful when deep down he knows Hester is perfect for him. If their relationship can't be jolted out of it's inevitable stall, perhaps Hester should look elsewhere, find someone not just interested in a pretty face and supposed femininity. Not Rathbone, however. I don't know why, but I really don't like the match. I fear I'm going to be disappointed on that score though. Back to Monk. He held Mrs. Stonefield in high regard until meeting Miss Wyndham, then all of a sudden he stoops to engaging in malicious gossip and supposition about Genevieve Stonefield and she drops in his estimation. It's as if he constantly needs to compare the women in his life against one another. That said, what Drusilla Wyndham did to him was deplorable. I wonder if Monk will ever realize just how much Hester helped him and saved his reputation.

The crime was quite complex and I certainly did not see the end coming. Very powerful.

Not too many unusual names in this one. Only one that pops up in every book because she's one of the main characters. Callandra, which I think is quite pretty.

I really enjoyed this book. Since it's not available yet on audio at audible.com, I had to buy it on because I couldn't wait. This is a great series and it's like eating my favorite dessert - can't get enough. I figured it out early, but then thought "no, that can't be it," and then I was impressed how well Ms. Perry kept me guessing until the end.
This book will stand out for years to come. It’s one you won’t forget...Anne Perry is one of the best Victorian novelists..
This book was different from the others in this series. I guessed the outcome before I finished but it still was fun to read.
Anne Perry cannot write a poor novel. This book is another excellent title from this prolific mystery writer. I especially enjoy her character development and the geographic and historical background as well as the plot.
My complaint was I had already purchased the hard copy many months ago and the old memory cells failed me. Consequently, paying the exorbitant Kimble price annoyed me sufficiently to complain about the cost of this novel. should include the date the books are originally published so old failing memory guys such as myself can control rising blood pressure so frequent during excess purchases.
Good information about the treatment of plaque and typhoid but the plot was really very clear from the beginning it was just a matter of how long it would take to unravel......too long!
I have read all the Monk books prior to this one and intend to complete the series, but I found parts of the plotline of Cain a bit unconvincing. However, the subplots, the parts which deal with Monk personally and his struggle to regain himself, were quite good. That is why I only give four stars. I'd give the primary plot a three, but the other brought it up. Good writing. I always finish these books with great anticipation of the next.
This Anne Perry book is dark in theme and content; the streets are dark and dirty, the street characters are close-mouthed and wear filthy rags, and the mystery is richly layered. I liked seeing the seedy side of Victorian London. Monk and his colleagues are deeply involved in solving this crime and the unfolding of clues keeps me reading way beyond my bedtime.
